Food & Drink: Rejuvenated Grant House shakes off the ghosts

first_img Everyone is familiar with the rumors about the ghosts who haunt The Grant House. After meeting with Scott Flury (who recently purchased the restaurant with his wife, Sarah), I realized the ghosts of the Grant House have been relieved of their duties and new energy has flowed into this historic site.Scott Flury explained, “We wanted to make it less formal, we want people to feel relaxed. The prior owners looked at this as a destination restaurant, a special occasion restaurant. We want people to know we are open for everybody.”A few things are the same. The old staff have remained and some new staff have been added. Farm-fresh produce is delivered daily, seafood is delivered three times a week, and everything is scratch made. Ulysses Club Membership and event space rental are available.Nonetheless, the Flurys have made some changes to create a less formal environment. They are offering a happy hour menu (called the Bar & At Ease Menu), breakfast service every day, and a special brunch menu (food and drink) on the weekends. The Bar & At Ease Menu is offered from 3 to 6 p.m. seven days a week. The menu includes entree items such as The Grant burger (a 1/2 pound grass-fed ground beef burger with pimiento cheese and bacon), polenta and mushrooms, and carne asada tacos. These menu items are served on part of the patio and in the bar at a reduced price. Snacks (like housemade potato chips and seasoned bar nuts) and drink specials are available at the bar. Airlines sue state over sick leave law

first_imgSEATTLE — A coalition of airlines including Alaska, JetBlue, United and Southwest has sued Washington over its new sick leave law, saying it’s part of a mishmash of state and local measures that could increase costs and delays for travelers — and which are blocked by federal regulation of air travel and interstate commerce.Airlines For America filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Tacoma on Tuesday. The organization said at least six other states — Arizona, California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Oregon and Vermont — and 30 cities have paid sick leave laws.“Airlines cannot operate their nationwide systems properly if flight crews are subject to the employment laws of every state in which they are based, live, or pass through,” Airlines for America said in an emailed statement Wednesday. The complaint put it this way: “A flight crew departing from SeaTac International Airport, landing in Portland International Airport, and continuing to San Diego International Airport is subject to three different paid sick leave laws in a single duty period, each with its own accrual, compensation, reporting, and leave requirements.”The lawsuit seeks a ruling that federal regulation of air travel precludes Washington state’s sick leave law from applying to the airlines’ pilots or flight crews.last_img read more

Woman in custody after I-5 chase

first_imgUPDATE: Freda Lynn Currier was sentenced Feb. 1, 2019, in Clark County Superior Court to six months in jail after pleading guilty to third-degree assault and attempting to elude police. She will also serve a year of community custody, according to court records. The judgment states that “reasonable grounds exist to believe the defendant is a mentally ill person … and that this condition is likely to have influenced the offense.”___________________________________________________________________________________________________A Seattle woman faces several allegations in Clark County Superior Court for allegedly leading deputies on a high-speed freeway chase and ramming a law enforcement vehicle.Freda Lynn Currier, 52, was arrested Friday on suspicion of first-degree assault, attempting to elude police and intimidation of a public servant. At about 12:30 a.m., a Clark County sheriff’s deputy, who was transporting a person in custody, witnessed a large red van speeding up to 95 mph on southbound Interstate 5 near Ridgefield. The deputy “advised the van was swerving between lanes of travel so violently he feared the van was going to flip over,” according to an affidavit of probable cause.Back-up deputies were called, as the deputy decided it was too dangerous to engage in a chase while someone was in his vehicle. Responding deputies tried to stop the van with a spike strip, but they missed, according to the affidavit. The van continued onto the I-5 Bridge and over the Columbia River, at which point it suddenly slowed down to about 25 mph, according to the affidavit. A deputy used their car to pivot the van, which crashed into a retaining wall, bounced off of it and turned around to face north.last_img read more

Real Madrid have made a historic error in selling Ronaldo –

first_imgReal Madrid are wrong to have sold Cristiano Ronaldo in what will go down as a “historic error” on the club’s behalf, says former president Ramon CalderonThe Portuguese superstar had been linked with a shock departure from the Santiago Bernabeu after May’s Champions League final victory over Liverpool. While some still doubted whether a transfer would ever actually materialise, Ronaldo then completed a €112m move to Serie A champions Juventus last week and is expected to be officially presented later this evening.Following his arrival in 2009 from Manchester United, Ronaldo scored 450 goals in 438 appearances to become Real’s all-time top goalscorer and proved indispensable in their recent European domination. And Calderon, who brought Ronaldo to the Spanish capital in 2009, is far from impressed with the 33-year-old’s sale.“It’s very sad that they have sold a player like Cristiano Ronaldo, it’s a real pity,” Calderon told Spanish news outlet AS, via The Express.“[Particularly] With what it cost me to sign him, the effort that we made to bring him to Madrid.Franck Ribery, FiorentinaFiorentina owner: “Ribery played better than Ronaldo!” Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Fiorentina owner Rocco Commisso was left gushing over Franck Ribery’s performance against Juventus, which he rates above that of even Cristiano Ronaldo’s.“Manchester [United] did not want to sell him and it was very difficult.“And now they have sold him for €100million. There isn’t a player who scores 60 goals a year for you and is worth to you [only] €100m.“Selling Cristiano is not good news, either for €100m or a billion.“But it is true that we put a clause of a €1bn to discourage those interested in him in the future, but at the same time, to show that there was no other player like him.“It’s a historic error.”Ronaldo could return to haunt Real earlier than expected, should he be available for Juventus in their International Champions Cup clash with the La Liga giants on August 4.last_img read more

Barkley determined to remain in the England setup

first_imgAfter making his return back to the England national team, Ross Barkley is determined to work hard at Chelsea to keep his place in the squad. The 24-year-old who had not featured for England since 2016 started the UEFA Nations League game against Croatia on Friday night.Asked whether the match felt like a second England debut, Barkley told Sky Sports, as quoted by FourFourTwo:“No, because I’ve been here before, so I know what it’s like to play for England and how much it means to everyone and myself.”“Over the years I’ve worked hard and where I’m at right now, I feel fresh, I feel strong. I’m sure I’ll continue to get fitter and continue to improve.”Jadon Sancho, Borussia DortmundCrouch: Liverpool could beat Man United to Jadon Sancho Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Peter Crouch wouldn’t be surprised to see Jadon Sancho end up at Liverpool one day instead of his long-term pursuers Manchester United.“I’ll work hard at club level and hopefully that will take care of itself.”The game was played in an empty stadium as Croatia served their punishment for an incident in a Euro 2016 qualifier against Italy when a swastika was marked on the pitch.“It was odd but we’ve played in situations like this before in our youth days,” added Barkley.“I thought in the second half we had our fair share of chances and any other day I feel we would have come away with the three points and possibly won 3-0. I thought we should have been a bit more ruthless today.”“We had the best chances and I can’t remember them really having many chances other than a couple of shots from the edge of the box. It’s disappointing that we didn’t win the game.”last_img read more

Hodgson insists German star is not a direct replacement for LoftusCheek

first_imgCrystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson insists Max Meyer is not a direct replacement for Ruben Loftus-Cheek who spent last season on loan from Chelsea with the Eagles. The England international impressed during his loan spell last season, earning a place in England’s 23 man squad to the World Cup, but in his absence Palace have struggled for creativity in the middle of the park.In addition to the departure of Loftus-Cheek, Palace also lost Yohan Cabaye and though not a direct replacement for both players, Hodgson expects Meyer to assume a similar role filled by both players last season. He said, according to Sports Mole:Tammy Abraham, ChelseaChelsea hat-trick hero Tammy Abraham hopes for more Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Tammy Abraham hopes this season will be his big breakthrough at Chelsea after firing his first hat-trick for the club in Saturday’s 5-2 win at Wolves.“I don’t make comparisons. If I start making comparisons my wife will be battering me about Oscar Wilde; all comparisons are odious. So don’t compare. If that was a good meal, say it was a good meal and don’t say it was better than the one we had last week. I am beginning to learn from that.”“Yohan Cabaye was a very fine player. I don’t think we are playing worse football than when Yohan was here. Last year we had a spell, we won some games and climbed up the table. This year we aren’t and people will look at it and ask why is it, and automatically ask if it’s down to Cabaye?”“I don’t think that’s a single reason we have taken fewer points in the last four games, albeit I was a great admirer of Yohan. I still think we have players in the team who can compensate for his loss.”“Yohan played in those first seven games (last season) when we lost. It’s the classic one; the best place to be when the team’s loss is on the bench.”last_img read more

Emery insists he has no concerns over Koscielnys fitness

San Diego assemblymans gun control bill heads to Gov Browns desk

first_imgSan Diego assemblyman’s gun control bill heads to Gov. Brown’s desk KUSI Newsroom KUSI Newsroom, Posted: August 28, 2018 Categories: California News, Local San Diego News Tags: gun control, San Diego Assemblyman Todd Gloria FacebookTwittercenter_img Updated: 9:00 AM August 28, 2018 SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – A San Diego lawmaker’s bill to regulate concealed carry weapons is headed to Gov. Jerry Brown’s desk after receiving final bipartisan approval Monday from the Assembly.AB 2103, introduced in February by Assemblyman Todd Gloria, D-San Diego, mandate a minimum of eight hours of training and live-fire shooting exercises to obtain a concealed carry permit in California. Under current state law, no training is required to acquire a concealed carry permit and/or weapon, he said. The gun control groups Moms Demand Action and Everytown for Gun Safety sponsored the bill, which is strongly opposed by the National Rifle Association, Gloria said. The state Senate approved the legislation last week.“From day one, this bill has been about protecting the public. From day one, this bill embodied an important yet straightforward message: enough is enough,” Gloria said. “With the continued prevalence of gun violence in this nation, we can no longer be idle or claim ignorance.”Brown has until Sept. 30 to sign or veto the bill. Gloria’s spokesman, Nick Serrano, expressed optimism that Brown will sign it into law, noting that Gloria’s office and Brown’s office have worked together through the amendment process.Wendy Wheatcroft, leader of the California chapter of Moms Demand Action, said the legislation would “solidify California’s status as a leader in gun safety. This bill can prevent tragedy before it strikes by ensuring concealed weapons holders demonstrate that they can operate a firearm safely.”The bill’s bipartisan success “speaks volumes,” Serrano said, noting that gun violence has continued to plague the country and draw headlines, most recently on Sunday with a shooting at a video game tournament in Jacksonville, Florida, that took several lives.“It’s about being smarter,” Serrano said. “We want to make sure guns aren’t getting into the wrong hands.” last_img read more
