first_imgzoom South Korean shipbuilder Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction (HHIC) has sealed a deal with its creditors on the shipbuilder’s self-rescue plan that will see the two parties enter joint management of the company. However, the agreement, set to enter into force in the coming month and a half, stipulates for major workforce cuts, predominantly through voluntary retirement, Yonhap reports. The measure is likely to see up to 500 jobs cut.In addition, creditors are reported to have also asked for wage reductions, personnel relocation and some asset disposal. As World Maritime News reported earlier, having been faced with cash shortage the Busan-based company was trying to agree on a debt restructuring plan with its creditors and had requested a voluntary agreement with its Korea Development Bank (KDB).Hanjin has been posting losses for six years now due to a sluggish industry condition but also in part due to financial losses stemming from its investment in the Philippines-based Subic Shipyard. The shipbuilder’s debt stood at KRW 1.6 trillion (USD 1.34 billion) in November last year, including KRW 500 billion owed to KDB and KRW 210 billion to Hana Bank.World Maritime News Stafflast_img read more

Apple updates Mac to fix faulty video conferencing app

first_imgSan Francisco: To fix a faulty feature on video conferencing app Zoom, Apple has released a silent update for Mac users. To fix the vulnerability that was letting websites automatically add users to a video call without their permission, Apple’s update would now prompt users asking them if they want to open the app. According to Apple, the automatically-deployed update removes the hidden web server, which Zoom quietly installed on users’ Macs when they installed the app, TechCrunch reported on Wednesday. Also Read – Spotify rolls out Siri support, new Apple TV app The video conferencing platform faced flack from users following a public vulnerability disclosure on Monday by a software engineer Jonathan Leitschuh after he described how any website could forcibly join a user to a Zoom call, with their video camera activated, without the user’s permission. On Tuesday, Zoom released a fixed app version however Apple said its actions would protect users both past and present from the undocumented web server vulnerability without affecting or hindering the functionality of the Zoom app itself, the report said. Over four million users across 750,000 companies use Zoom for video conferencing around the world. “We’re happy to have worked with Apple on testing this update. We expect the web server issue to be resolved today. We appreciate our users’ patience as we continue to work through addressing their concerns,” the report quoted a Zoom spokesperson as saying.last_img read more

British game meat to be exported for first time as Hong Kong

The deal the British Game Alliance brokered is with the luxury meat purveyor Sutherland, which supplies high-end hotels including the Mandarin Oriental and Grand Hyatt. Romeo Alfonso, Managing Director of Sutherland’s MeatLab, said: “Here in Hong Kong our high-end consumers consider British game meat to be exotic with a unique taste. They like the idea of eating birds which have been free to live wild around the British countryside.” It is much easier now for game to be exported since the British Game Alliance launched last year, as it acts as a regulator and marketing board. This means game birds can be traced back to where and when they were shot, and ensure they meet industry standards. So far nearly 600 estates representing over a third of the UK feathered game sector have become members since it was founded 16 months ago.Lincolnshire Game is processing the birds for the Hong Kong market.Simon Wilkinson and Tristan Kirk, who run the company, said: “What is unfolding is the modernisation of our sector, to fall in line with other meat sectors. For too long there has been too much variability in the quality of product from sporting estates.” British game meat is to be exported for the first time as Hong Kong signs a trade deal to buy UK grouse.Later this month, birds shot on British moors will be flown over after the Government backed a trade deal negotiated by the British Game Alliance.Around 250,000 grouse, partridge and pheasant are now set to be airfreighted to high-end restaurants in Hong Kong and Macao with frozen ones shipped to retail outlets.Soon, fresh game birds will be sent across the globe, as Canada and Japan hold discussions with the new game regulator. This initiative has been backed by Defra and the Department for International Trade.George Eustice, the Minister of State for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, said: “This is a welcome opportunity for the game meat industry and a further demonstration of the demand for Britain’s high-quality produce.“As we leave the EU we will continue to support our food and farming industry to grow and sell more to markets around the globe.” Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp? Suunto X10 GPS Watch Hands On

first_imgI’m pretty clearly not the target audience for the feature-rich Suunto X10 GPS watch ($699 list). This “outdoor sports instrument” from military-grade watchmaker Suunto offers an altimeter, barometer, compass, and everything else a Boy (or Girl) Scout might want in a heavy-duty watch. It’s certainly overkill for a city dweller like me, but if you’re planning to do some hard-core trail running –or just want a good watch for backpacking, hiking, and other outdoorsy activities– the X10 will have you covered. Unfortunately, as I was testing the Suunto in New York City, it was hard to test a lot of the more advanced functions–even the GPS was spotty with all the interference that comes from navigating the urban jungle. The X10 is not quite as chunky as the Timex Global Trainer GPS, but its face still easily covered my entire wrist. Despite its size, the Suunto is as light as any of the watches I tested. Its military heritage is echoed in the X10’s spare design. It’s all black, except for a yellow ring around the face.Like the Timex, the Suunto offers a number of views. While there are fewer ways to view the data about your run, the various menus reflect the plethora of gauges within the watch. Beyond Time, you can check the altimeter and barometer (including a temperature gauge), utilize the compass, monitor your distance in Navigate mode, and track your speed. Within Navigate you can access pre-programmed routes (which you can set up using Suunto’s included software), or select the TrackBack option, which will help you find your way back to your starting point.Starting a log on the Suunto is far from intuitive; you’ll want to make sure you read the instructions carefully before you head out on a run, or else you’ll spend quite a while puzzling over the various symbols on the watch. And unfortunately, the timer will start running even before the watch has found a GPS signal. It’s a minor gripe, but when you’re looking to get exact split times, particularly on a short run, it can be a pain. And therein lies the real issue of using the X10 in the city. Unfortunately I did not have the opportunity to test it in an environment more conducive to the strengths of this outdoorsy watch, so I was severely limited by its finicky GPS reception. Though you can set the watch to search for GPS signal every minute, or even every second, I often found my workouts being broken up into 10- to 20-minute chunks as the GPS would find and subsequently lose satellite reception. This is a major liability for the stats-obsessed runner, though it may pose less of a problem for more recreational users. One other minor gripe: the backlight function is difficult to find and activate, which makes tracking progress trickier on night runs. While the online software acts as a supplement for the Timex and Garmin, it’s central to the operation of the Suunto. The X10 is most effective with maps preloaded, which you can set up using the software, and you can also select waypoints where an alarm can go off during your run. I could see this coming in handy to remind distance runners to eat and drink at certain mileages. Unfortunately, the associated software is PC-only (and oddly, at this time doesn’t support Windows 7). Once you set it up and upload your workouts, the software serves up maps and charts of your elevation change and speed, along with other related information, including an ongoing weather graph. The most interesting feature is the site’s integration with Google Earth. If you don’t have the application, it lives locally on your system, but if you do have Google Earth installed, your workouts will sync with the maps. The Suunto X10 has a lot of promise as a robust data-collection device for the avid outdoorsman. This is reflected in its impressive feature set–and its hefty price tag. I’m just sorry to say that I can’t recommend it for the weekend road warrior or urban running enthusiast.last_img read more

These Android apps have been tracking you even when you say stop

first_img Sep 1 • iPhone 11, Apple Watch 5 and more: The final rumors • Mobile Internet Security Mobile Apps Aug 31 • Your phone screen is gross. Here’s how to clean it NurPhoto/Getty Images Some apps may track your activity over time, even when you tell them to forget the past. And there’s nothing you can do about it.Roughly 17,000 Android apps collect identifying information that creates a permanent record of the activity on your device, according to research from the International Computer Science Institute that was shared with CNET. The data collection appears to violate the search giant’s policy on collecting data that can be used to target users for advertising in most cases, the researchers said. The apps can track you by linking your Advertising ID — a unique but resettable number used to tailor advertising — with other identifiers on your phone that are difficult or impossible to change. Those IDs are the device’s unique signatures: the MAC address, IMEI and Android ID. Less than a third of the apps that collect identifiers take only the Advertising ID, as recommended by Google’s best practices for developers.”Privacy disappears” when apps collect those persistent identifiers, said Serge Egelman, who led the research. He said his team, which reported the findings to Google in September, observed most of the apps sending identifying information to advertising services, an apparent violation of Google’s policies. See All 33 Aug 31 • Best places to sell your used electronics in 2019 Share your voice The company’s policies allow developers to collect the identifiers but forbid them from combining the Advertising ID with hardware IDs without explicit consent of the user, or from using the identifiers that can’t be reset, to target ads. What’s more, Google’s best practices for developers recommend collecting only the Advertising ID.The behavior fits into the tech industry’s long history of creating privacy measures that websites and app developers quickly learn to bypass. Adobe, for instance, was forced to address Flash cookies in 2011 after complaints that the snippets of software could survive in your web browser even after you cleared all your cookies. Similar complaints arose in 2014 over Verizon’s and AT&T’s use of so-called “supercookies,” which tracked users across multiple devices and couldn’t be cleared. In 2012, Microsoft accused Google of circumventing its P3P web privacy standard, which let users of the Internet Explorer browser set their preferences for cookies. (Google countered that the standard wasn’t useful anymore).Data collected by mobile apps has provoked even broader scrutiny because of the explosion of smartphones and tablets. In January, Facebook and Google were both found to have used a developer tool to circumvent Apple’s privacy rules and build iOS apps that collect user information. Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018 and other privacy controversies have sparked greater scrutiny over how data is being collected and used. (For tips on how to prevent apps from taking your data, please see this story.)Egelman’s team, which previously found around 6,000 children’s apps improperly collecting data, said Thursday that big-name apps for adults are sending permanent identifiers to advertising services. The apps included included Angry Birds Classic, the popular smartphone game, as well as Audiobooks by Audible and Flipboard. Clean Master, Battery Doctor and Cheetah Keyboard, all utilities developed by Cheetah Mobile, were also found to send permanent info to advertising networks. All of these apps have been installed on at least 100 million devices. Clean Master, a phone utility that includes antivirus and phone optimization services, has been installed on 1 billion devices. What Google’s doing about itGoogle said it had investigated Egelman’s report and taken action on some apps. It declined to say how many apps it acted on or what action was taken, or to identify which of its policies the apps had violated. The company said its policies allow for the collection of hardware identifiers and the Android ID for some purposes, like fraud detection, but not for the targeting of ads.Google also said it can enforce its policies only when Android apps send the identifiers to Google’s own ad networks, such as AdMob. If the apps send the data to outside networks, Google says it can’t monitor them for violations.”We take these issues very seriously,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement. “Combining Ad ID with device identifiers for the purpose of ads personalization is strictly forbidden. We’re constantly reviewing apps — including those listed in the researcher’s report — and will take action when they do not comply with our policies.”Google has a number of initiatives that aim to protect user privacy and security. In a blog post Wednesday, the company said it increased the number of abusive apps it blocked from the Google Play store by 55 percent in 2018.Representatives of Rovio, which develops the Angry Birds series, and of Audible, didn’t respond to requests for comment. A Cheetah Mobile spokesman said in an email that its apps send a device’s Android ID to a company that helps it track installations of its products. The information isn’t used for targeted ads, and the company complies with all relevant Google policies and laws, the spokesman said. He added that the version of Battery Doctor tested by the researchers was out of date; Cheetah Mobile updated the app in 2018 to no longer collect the IMEI.  Flipboard said it doesn’t use the Android ID for ad targeting.data-privacy-security-hackers-hacking-unlock-iphone-0996 James Martin/CNET The data collection identified by Egelman and his team is similar to an issue that got Uber in trouble with Apple in 2015. According to The New York Times, Apple CEO Tim Cook was furious to learn that Uber was collecting iOS users’ hardware identifiers against Apple’s policies and threatened to remove the Uber app from the App Store.Egelman’s team tested the apps as they ran on Android 6, also known as Marshmallow. Just over half of all Android devices run Android 6 or an earlier version of the system, according to a Google analysis from October. The researchers configured a version of Android that let them track which identifiers an app collected and then ran thousands of apps on the modified software. Egelman said that changing your Advertising ID should serve the same function as clearing out your web browsing data. When you clear cookies, websites you visited in the past won’t recognize you. That stops them from building up data about you over time. But you can’t reset other identifiers, like the MAC address and IMEI. The MAC address is a unique identifier that your device broadcasts to internet connections like Wi-Fi routers. The IMEI is an identifier for your specific device. Both identifiers can sometimes be used to prevent stolen phones from accessing a cellular network. The Android ID is another identifier that’s unique to each device. It can be reset, but only if you run a factory reset of your device. If apps send ad networks any of those identifiers, it won’t matter how many times you reset your advertising ID. They can still tell it’s you.Sandy Bilus, a privacy and cybersecurity lawyer at Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr, said the apps might be in violation of the General Data Protection Regulation, a European Union law that requires organizations to tell users what data they collect on them, if they haven’t spelled out what they’re collecting to EU users. “It certainly could raise GDPR issues,” Bilus said. “The app developers who are collecting and using this data should be careful about that.”Lorrie Faith Cranor, director of the CyLab Usable Privacy and Security Laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University, said that Google is in the best position to crack down on apps that use hardware identifiers and the Android ID in ways that violate its own policies. The fact that developers are creating workarounds to the Advertising ID suggests that many people are resetting the identifier, Cranor said, even if most users are unaware of the privacy feature. “Otherwise,” she said, “why would they bother?”First published at 5:00 a.m. PT.Updated at 7:34 a.m. PT: Added more details about Cheetah’s apps.Google Play says: We’ve cracked down on bad apps.Privacy? Children Younger Than 16 No Longer Included In Southwest Keys Proposed Houston

first_img Share Elizabeth Trovall/Houston Public MediaThe location of a new Southwest Key facility slated to house migrant children.A proposed Houston shelter originally slated to hold unaccompanied migrant children ranging from infants to teenagers is now seeking only to house 16- and 17-year-olds.Southwest Key has updated its permit request and no longer plans to house small children at a shelter near downtown Houston. Once repairs are made within the building consistent with city rules, Southwest Key will be issued the certificate needed for it to open the shelter, the city announced. The shelter will house more than 200 immigrant youth, Southwest Key said in a statement to News 88.7.The non-profit’s application ignited a political battle last year as city leaders spoke out against the Trump administration’s policy of separating migrant families apprehended along the southern border. Mayor Sylvester Turner said he opposed the shelter because it was planning to house young children who were separated from their families.Turner’s administration originally denied Southwest Key’s permit request as officials claimed the facility did not meet requirements for an institutional permit needed to house young children. That spurred a lawsuit against the city in which lawyers for Southwest Key argued the denial was a “discriminatory and unconstitutional obstruction.”Now, Southwest Key has revised its initial permit application, saying it only wants to house 16- and 17-year-olds, which qualifies it for a residential permit instead. A spokesperson for the non-profit could not say whether the group planned to drop the lawsuit.Still, the city said a January inspection of the facility revealed problems in meeting the fire code, but once those and a few electrical and plumbing repairs are made, city officials will issue the permits needed for the shelter to open.Southwest Key said it has addressed outstanding inspection issues and is awaiting approval of the permit.last_img read more

Arbitration ruling in Laiki case vindicates central bank

first_imgBy Stelios OrphanidesThe Central Bank of Cyprus said that it feels vindicated for its action with respect to Laiki Bank after the International Arbitration Court issued its ruling last week dismissing the claims for €1.1bn in damages filed by a group of investors. The central bank’s actions in question include its decision in late 2011 to fire the lender’s executive management, including the former strongman of Laiki, Andreas Vgenopoulos who was among the plaintiffs and died in November 2016, the bank’s recapitalisation in May 2012, and the imposition of resolution measures ten months later, the bank supervisor said.“The decision analyses the lengthy written testimony filed by the Republic and the plaintiffs and inter alia, vindicates the Central Bank of Cyprus’ action,” it said. The central bank added that it will continue to make resources available to defend Cyprus in the context of other investment disputes that have been brought against the island in other arbitration court abroad concerning the financial sector, in cooperation with the law office and the ministry of finance. One such case is the one filed by the owners of FBME Bank against the Republic of Cyprus, seeking €1.5bn in compensation, after the Central Bank of Cyprus placed the Cyprus branch of the bank four years ago under administration and subsequent resolution, after US authorities described it as a financial institution of primary money laundering concern. The favourable outcome of the case is owed to a considerable degree to the contribution of Attorney-general Costas Clerides, the Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom (UK) LLP, their associates and the Ministry of Finance, as well to the central bank’s handling, the bank supervisor added. You May LikeList Nebula8 Cutest Exotic Dog Breeds From Around The WorldList NebulaUndoHealth & Human Research10 Foods To Never Eat If You Have High Blood PressureHealth & Human ResearchUndoBest BikesTop 10 Most Expensive Cars Available in the WorldBest BikesUndo Verstappen wins crazy German Grand PrixUndoFour dead in California garlic festival shootingUndoHouse rejects presidential veto over repossession lawUndoby Taboolaby Taboolalast_img read more

Cabinet approves establishment of commercial court

first_imgA bill aiming at the establishment of a commercial court was approved by the cabinet on Tuesday, according to Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou. The court will deal with commercial cases with claims of more than €2 million, according to Nicolaou, even though the move was opposed by business groups that argued the ceiling must come down so that more cases are included within the court’s remit in order to lighten the burden of district courts.“We have studied the English and Irish models and have consulted both the supreme court and the pancyprian bar association for the promotion of the bill,” Nicolaou said. The slow speed of Cypriot courts is one of the reasons that investors stay away, and therefore “the court will also contribute to the expanding and enhancing of the competitiveness of our country mainly with regards to the provision of services, and will attract foreign investment, thereby enhancing our country’s long-term economic growth”, Nicolaou added. The approved bill, which has been uploaded to the ministry’s website, contains the court’s defining structures, its jurisdiction, the qualifications required from judges who will be appointed to conduct hearings, as well as the procedural guidelines and regulations of the court.Five judges will hold the title of district court president, while the court will operate in Nicosia and Limassol, Nicolaou said. The Commercial Court will have jurisdiction over matters including claims arising from contracts or disputes between companies, the purchase or sale of goods, the exploitation of oil or gas, the purchase or exchange of shares, intellectual property and insurance affairs.“We have studied the number of cases that have been registered so far, and we believe that through the procedure to be followed in the commercial court, such cases can be dealt with in less than a year,” Nicolaou added, noting that each year around 300 cases are filed. You May LikeUltimate Pet Nutrition Nutra Thrive SupplementAdd This One Thing To Your Dog’s Food To Help Them Be HealthierUltimate Pet Nutrition Nutra Thrive SupplementUndoAngels And EntrepreneursRobert Herjavec Announce Venture Could Make You RichAngels And EntrepreneursUndoDr. Marty ProPower Plus Supplement3 Dangerous Foods People Feed Their Dogs (Without Realizing It)Dr. Marty ProPower Plus SupplementUndo Turkish Cypriot actions in Varosha ‘a clear violation’ of UN resolutions, Nicosia saysUndoConcern over falling tourism numbersUndoPensioner dies after crash on Paphos-Polis roadUndoby Taboolaby Taboolalast_img read more

contaminated with a highly infectious strain of bacteria The Florida Department of Health confirmed one person died after consuming a raw oyster that carried Vibrio vulnificus bacteria which is often not confirm further details of the ongoing investigation and the provenance of the oyster is unclear “Infections are rare but exposures occur more commonly during the summer months from May to October when the water is warmer” Florida health officials told the Tampa Bay Times reports in a statement There have been 16 cases and three deaths across the state from Vibrio vulnificus according to the Florida Department of Health Most people who contract Vibrio vulnificus infections either entered water with an open wound allowing the bacteria to enter the body or ate raw or undercooked shellfish caused by the Vibrio family of bacteria (also called vibriosis) result only in gastrointestinal illness according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) but serious cases can lead to made headlines outside of Florida lately As of earlier this month a man in New Jersey was fighting for his limbs after contracting the infection while crabbing in a local river The CDC has also warned by unlicensed personnel"It was an ‘off books’ site And the kicker they didn’t even have a charity Not a penny went to charity" Wrigley said "I stand firm on what that evidence was in that case"The
